5 Summer Activities That Can Harm Your Smile

Simply put, the warmer months should be enjoyed traveling, swimming in the pool, taking a road trip, and catching up on some much-needed R&R, not sitting in your emergency dentist’s treatment chair. Although there isn’t a way to completely eliminate your risk of sustaining a serious dental injury, there are several measures you can take to reduce your risk. To start, here are five summer activities that can harm your smile!

1. Sipping on Beverages with Added Sugar

As you may already know, sugar is one of the leading causes of cavities. That’s why dentists encourage their patients to keep their consumption of beverages with added sugar, like lemonade and soda, to a minimum. When you do indulge, rinse your mouth thoroughly with clean water afterward and brush your teeth about 20 minutes later.

2. Playing Sports Without a Mouthguard

Do you know how many teeth are knocked out each year in a sports-related accident? About five million. So, if you’re planning on participating in a sport this summer – even if it’s just a pick-up game of soccer – you need to wear a mouthguard. In fact, you should even wear one for solo sports, like surfing and skateboarding!

3. Not Exercising Caution with Crunchy Foods

Tortilla chips, popcorn, and raw nuts are just a few crunchy foods that you can find at just about any fair or BBQ. Since biting into hard items like these can result in a chip or crack on your tooth, it’s important to always exercise caution. If you’re in the mood for something crunchy, it’s also a good idea to opt for vitamin-rich options, like carrots and apples.

4. Swimming in a Pool with a Poor pH Balance

Swimming is a great way to beat the heat and get some exercise in. However, swimming in a pool with a poor pH balance can quickly erode away the enamel on your teeth, increasing your risk of cavities. So, before you get in, check that the pH level is between 7.2 and 7.8!

5. Frequently Snacking Between Meals

If you get hungry between meals, you should absolutely listen to your body. On the other hand, snacking because your bored can negatively impact your oral health, particularly if you aren’t brushing your teeth afterward. If you find yourself frequently raiding the pantry, then do your best to make your meals more satiating and filling!
